See, the problem in this sentence is “Tercels”. Also the fact that they all apparently run. I mean, if you have a mullet and a single wide, I could see this happening with an assortment of Camaros/Trans Ams, but this is like collecting Honda Civics or J-bodies.

If I could do it again, I would not buy two projects. I would have found a perfect physical specimen with a blown motor or tranny and then found a hideous runner and had one brand new Tercel.

Maybe that was overly harsh. It’s just so weird to me, I can’t fully define how weird it seems. I’ve known people with 2-3 copies of a given car where only one runs well (the rest are for parts)...

If in 2046 I heard about someone that collected 5x 2014-2016 Focuses, I’d find them just as bizarre. Perhaps worse - probably masochists.

Selling them all at once is also a bit mind boggling. The market couldn't be big for this many copies of the same car.

The other day I was talking to my wife, albeit not sincerely, about buying an old Peugeot 505 turbo to restore and have a neat quirky runabout. Her brother was a GM master tech for years and could help me get it on the road. We only realistically have enough space in our driveway/garage for three cars, and with my old Toyota, there is no more to be had. So I simply posited that I could store one of my basket cases at my parents place, about 200 miles away. They have tons of land. She responded "you can store yourself there too."

That’s pretty great storage though! We have a two car garage and the driveway has room for four, but the wife would need a clear path to the garage, so as it stands now my Toyota is in my side of the garage and my daily goes in front of it in the driveway. I could put one more in my "line," but that would be it. I figure once we've been married longer, or have more land, I can drag up more basket cases with impunity. Maybe.

The biggest cost into one of these cars would be the cage fabrication. However I am sure someone on Oppo has some experience with cage fabrication, which would greatly reduce the cost. I bet you could probably prep one for $3000-4000 on the high end if someone was willing to do the cages at material cost.

i was eyeballing figures a WHILE back, and just materials, for a LEGAL cage, and safety equipment was in the neighborhood of $2500. so that figure that you have of $4000 is probably pretty close all said and done. do we know anyone who admits to doing cages???

Hey, it could be worse. Think back to your childhood, then think of 30-40 year old cars that were in good shape. There weren’t many still running when I was a kid, let alone in good shape.

Your cars are in amazing shape in comparison...
